Eric Shumake builds healthcare UX careers, one app at a time

Designers and researchers don't need a clinical background to work in healthcare UX, and clinicians don't need a design degree. Everyone needs research skills, an understanding of how HIPAA shapes what goes on a screen, and one piece of work that proves you can handle a patient as a user. That's what my courses are built around: in three weeks you build and test your own healthcare app and leave with a case study, a demo video and a positioning statement. Over 560 people have done it.

I've spent twenty plus years on this with Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, Novartis and AliveCor. With Justin Ranton I also run a four week agentic AI app builder certification for anyone who wants to ship an app.

I really enjoyed how this course reinforced healthcare UX fundamentals while giving us the opportunity to design a healthcare app from start to finish. It helped me think more intentionally about considerations like HIPAA compliance, regulatory constraints, and patient sensitivity throughout the design process. I also really valued being able to see how other participants approached their projects, exchange feedback, and learn from the rest of the cohort. Having the opportunity to turn the final project into a case study I could share afterward made the course feel especially practical and applicable to my work as a product designer.
