Build to Elicit: AI Rapid Prototyping as a Discovery Skill

AI Rapid Prototyping as a Requirements Discovery and Elicitation Technique

You were trained to discover requirements by asking, listening, and writing it all down. That made sense when building software was slow and expensive.

Building a working, clickable prototype is now nearly free. You can stand up a working prototype in minutes, and a working prototype pulls out what people actually need faster than any interview, user story, or spec. Put something real in front of stakeholders and the reactions pour out, and those reactions and feedback are critical!

AI helps us write faster, but it doesn't mean that writing requirements is still the best way to collaborate.

This workshop treats AI rapid prototyping as what it really is: a discovery and elicitation technique. You will build and use prototypes to surface hidden assumptions, expose disagreement, and align technical, business, and vendor teams fast.

*This is a "bring your own tool workshop". Students can use any AI rapid prototyping tool. Common tools include: Loveable, Bolt, Replit, Claude Design, Claude Code, Gemini, and Gemini Canvas. If you do not have access to any of these, we recommend purchasing a monthly access to Loaveable or Claude Pro (includes design) for about $20.

What you’ll learn

Master AI prototyping as an elicitation skill, and shift from documenting requirements to discovering them in real time.

  • Understand why AI (fast and low-cost code) makes a working prototype your strongest requirements artifact and fastest path to alignment.

  • Understand why vibe coding an AI prototype beats other forms of discovery

  • Turn vague stakeholder requests into concrete reactions, and capture those reactions as real requirements.

  • Surface hidden assumptions, edge cases, and disagreement faster than any interview or workshop.

  • Treat the prototype as a question you're asking, not an answer you're presenting.

  • Keep it rough to invite critique, raise it only once the answer is settled.

  • Determine when to guide discovery vs. detailed validation with a prototype

  • Build interactive reports, data views, data interfaces, single features, and clickable apps from plain-language prompts.

  • Integrate live stakeholder feedback into a prototype on the spot to discover requirements in real time.

  • Use a working prototype as shared language and as a vendor brief that beats pages of acceptance criteria.

  • Set expectations so stakeholders react to a working workflow rather than text or sketches.

Workshop agenda

  • Why Prototype First: Code Is Cheap

Building software is nearly free now. See why a working prototype has become your strongest requirements artifact and the fastest way to get stakeholders aligned.

  • Prototyping Is Discovery - With the Right Mindset and Skill!

Learn how prototypes pull out what people can't put into words, and the success factors that separate discovery prototyping from delivery prototyping.

  • Build It: Features, Apps, and Full Workflows

Prototype a single feature, then a clickable app, and iterate to make it better.

  • Build It: Reports and Data, Data Interfaces (APIs, etc)

Yes, we can prototype these too! We will do this!

  • Prototyping as a Team Sport

Learn to bring the team and stakeholders into the active prototyping with you!

  • Take prototypes from discovery into delivery-ready specs

Push a working prototype further by mapping detailed scenarios, creating specs, and agent readable specs.
