Synthesis is the skill that separates researchers and designers from everyone else with access to the same AI tools. Making meaning out of ambiguous data, filtering what matters from what doesn't, and telling rich stories about users — that's not something you can outsource. It's our unique value and craft.

The problem is that most people use AI in ways that make synthesis worse, not better. Prompt--> output --> copy and paste. Nuance disappears and you're left with something that looks like research but doesn't hold up.

Great synthesis with AI requires a different approach: using AI to amplify and stretch your research intuition and judgment skills, not replace them.

This means knowing when to automate the structural work and when to slow down and use AI as a sparring partner — to challenge your assumptions, flip an insight on its head, and pressure-test your reasoning until you can actually defend it.
