'The Six Levers of Games-based Learning' is my framework that acts as a toolkit, helping trainers, teachers and learning designers to take the things that give games power and use them in learning experiences. This free resource gives you a quickstart guide in using one of the six levers: 'Set Learners an Open Challenge'. It's standalone, and you can use it to generate ideas for turning your learning content into a challenge-based learning game or gamified experience. It will also give you a flavour of the Six Levers framework.

Setting Learners an Open Challenge

People are demanding more from learning. Organisations want to stand out, and make sure learning really delivers. Learners are rejecting traditional methods and expect involvement, engagement and self-direction. More and more trainers, teachers and creators are discovering the power of games to engage learners and help them transfer learning to get results in their work. It's easy to get stuck wondering: ➼ How can I make sure my learning delivers on learning objectives and offers ROI, as well as being fun?➼ Where can I find inspiration for games-based learning ideas?➼ How do I develop ideas into actual, working learning experiences? 🔑 Learn to use a powerful framework that unlocks your creativity while guiding your choices I built the Six Levers of Games-Based Learning Framework as a way to help you understand where to start, and how to build games and ideas from games into your teaching and training. And as a way to inspire and guide you at each step of the process. I created this cohort-based course as a way to help you work through how to use the framework with your learning content. Whatever learning content you work with, the framework will support you to ➼ Assess the best way to build in games-based principles➼ Start and progress quickly, generating and developing ideas into gamified activities or games-based experiences➼ Produce results that get the power of games working for your learning aims The course will give you the tools, skills and confidence you need to: 🎨 Build games into your learning in four ways You'll be able to choose the right path, from integrating elements from games without directly using games, to choosing and framing existing games. And from adapting and hacking existing games to creating new learning games for your specific needs. 💥 Work with the Six Levers Framework as a toolkit to structure your work You'll be able to dive into the rich, detailed resource of the framework to guide every games-based project. From selecting options and getting inspiration to solving challenges and finding the right resource to make your ideas reality. 🧠 Apply your learning to your work You'll select a project based on your learning content and challenges, and use it to apply the learning from the Framework as you go. So you'll come away with a practical understanding, as well as a game or lesson plan for your learning content. 🧑‍🏫 How you'll learn: ➼ 6x live 90-minute interactive workshops, exploring the framework and how to use it➼ 6x 90-minute 'office hours', to get coaching and support on your challenges and progress➼ Project work to apply the framework to your choice of learning content➼ Curated asynchronous lessons and resources to help take your games-based work to the next level➼ Our community forum to get the feedback, support and accountability to develop your ideas➼ Lifetime access to the Six Levers Framework to use in all your work

Course syllabus

One 90-minute interactive workshop each Thursday, exploring a different element of the framework, and how to use it in your work.

Thursday Workshops: July 4-August 8, 2024

From July 11, you'll work on your chosen project, incorporating the week's new tools into it and sharing your progress on the course forum.

Ongoing Project

An optional 90-minute office hours each Tuesday, for you to bring challenges and progress, and get coaching, guidance and feedback.
