The Influential PM: Strategy, Stakeholders, Significance

Brennan Collins

VP Product. 500+ PMs Stuck to Strategic

From order-taker to outcome-owner. Build competence, confidence, and impact

Product Management is a business function, not a technical one. Thus, we are meant to act more like business owners than delivery managers.

If you are known for getting things done, but you still feel like something's missing or don't know if your work really matters, it's not a coincidence.

The PM with impact (and feels great about their work) is the one who connects feature work to business outcomes and speaks the language of executives.

Most PMs were trained in one pillar of the job: delivery. And yet, when it's time for promotion, they are judged on all four pillars instead: strategy, delivery, customer experience, and growth. That dissonance is often felt but unarticulated. The Influential PM makes this visible and shows you how to amplify your product impact and accelerate your career.

This is a three-week live small group cohort: six sessions with Brennan, practicing counter-intuitive techniques on your actual work with a cohort of peers who will sharpen your thinking.

What you’ll learn

Stop executing others' roadmaps. Build strategy that gets funded, speak the language of business, and win stakeholder buy-in.

  • Build the chain from your feature to a business outcome a VP would present to a board.

  • Numbers at every level. If there's no number, there's no ladder.

  • Learn to avoid vanity metrics (e.g. "engagement") and speak to anyone at any level.

  • Without real market data, stakeholder opinions win and your opinion loses.

  • Learn to discover customer needs beyond feature requests and turn those findings into strategic hypotheses that execs easily understand.

  • Your stakeholders aren't irrational. They're optimizing for things you can't see yet.

  • When you know what people are actually rewarded and punished for, you stop pitching to their stated priorities and start getting approved.

  • Typical strategy docs that are timelines of features in disguise answer "when" but do not clarify, align, or inspire.

  • Learn to present strategy as an emotional and logical pitch that pulls advocates to you.

  • Gaining executive support for your product and your career is crucial, but they don't really care what you built.

  • High-impact PMs connect what they build to the hidden number that each executive is worried about.

  • Resistance to your plans doesn't mean "no." It means you're framing things incorrectly.

  • Learn reframing techniques for the situations that trip up even the most experienced PMs.
