Decades of research on teams points to an uncomfortable finding: most of a team's performance is set by the conditions it operates under, meaning its membership, its purpose, its structure, and the support around it. Day-to-day management predicts surprisingly little. Roughly 60 percent of team performance traces back to design decisions, which means the leaders who improve their teams fastest are working on a different layer than everyone else.
