Microfluidics: From Fabrication to Single-Cell Analysis

Jacques Fattaccioli

Microfluidics researcher & ass. prof.

Microfluidics taught from the lab, not from a textbook

Microfluidics is behind the COVID test, genome sequencers, and single-cell assays reshaping biology — but also fuel cells, battery electrolytes, and microreactors driving the next generation of energy technologies. Yet for most researchers and engineers, it remains a black box.

This course removes that barrier: in four sessions, you will build the physical intuition and practical knowledge to design, understand, and use microfluidic systems in your own work.

What you’ll learn

From scaling laws to single-cell assays — gain the fluency to design, troubleshoot, and innovate with microfluidic systems.

  • Master the dimensionless numbers that govern microfluidic systems — Reynolds, Péclet, Capillary — and apply them instinctively.

  • Use the hydraulic-electrical analogy to calculate flow distribution, pressure drops, and gradient profiles in any network geometry.

  • Navigate cleanroom workflows, photolithography, and PDMS soft lithography — and match the right fabrication strategy to your application.

  • Predict droplet formation regimes, optimise encapsulation statistics, and exploit picoliter compartments for chemistry and biology.

  • Understand how miniaturisation transforms a quantitative measurement — from digital PCR to single-cell gene expression analysis.

  • Leave with the physical intuition and technical vocabulary to evaluate, troubleshoot, and design microfluidic systems on your own.
