Belonging by Design: Human-Centered AI for Mission-Driven Teams

Dr. Danny Glassmann

Human-Centered AI + Belonging Strategist

AI adoption is reshaping belonging at work. Redesign one real practice.

AI is already influencing how people are hired, advised, supported, evaluated, taught, and heard.

That creates real opportunity for speed, access, and better support. It also creates risk. A practice can become faster and cheaper while quietly moving voice, judgment, power, and accountability farther away from the people most affected.

Belonging is not produced by good intentions alone. It is shaped by whether people retain voice, dignity, agency, access, connection, and trust when a system acts on or around them.

This is not a generic reminder to keep a human in the loop. In 90 minutes, you will bring one real AI-enabled practice from your work and redesign it. You will decide what AI may influence, what requires safeguards, and where human judgment, accountability, relationship, override, and recourse must remain explicit.

You will leave with a redesigned practice, an Authority Boundary that names what AI may and may not do, the safeguards and human touchpoints that protect the practice, and an action plan you can take to your team.

Bring one real AI-enabled practice. Leave with a redesigned version that is more accountable, more defensible, and more human.

What you’ll learn

Redesign one AI-enabled practice so it strengthens belonging, preserves human judgment, and gives you a clear plan for action.

  • Trace where AI enters a workflow, communication, decision, or service.

  • See where people, information, power, judgment, and accountability actually sit.

  • Name who is closest to the impact and who is farthest from the decision.

  • Evaluate how the practice affects voice, dignity, agency, access, connection, and trust.

  • Notice who may be included, excluded, overlooked, misrepresented, or unable to participate fully.

  • Separate improved efficiency from improved human experience.

  • Decide, verb by verb, what AI may generate, summarize, recommend, flag, prioritize, evaluate, or decide.

  • Apply one clear rule: if the output determines what happens next and no human can realistically override it, that is authority, not chill.

  • Mark where human review is required before anything acts on a person.

  • Determine what AI can assist, what requires safeguards, and where humans must lead.

  • Build safeguards that begin before the prompt and continue after the output.

  • Name the human who owns the final judgment and the path for question, appeal, or recourse.

  • Apply the Belonging by Design framework to a practice from your own work.

  • Add human touchpoints, review steps, and clearer lines of responsibility.

  • Create a more effective process without sacrificing belonging.

  • Choose one concrete change you can implement immediately.

  • Define one safeguard or decision rule for future AI use.

  • Name the next conversation your team or organization needs to have.

Workshop agenda

  • Opening: Efficiency Is Not Belonging (8 mins)

AI is changing how people are supported, evaluated, advised, heard, and included. We begin with the core idea that permission is not delegation, and efficiency does not automatically create belonging.

  • Part 1: The Framework in Action (12 minutes)

See the complete method applied to an AI support-triage case, from geometry through redesign, so you understand the moves before applying them to your practice.

  • Part 2: Map Where AI Enters the Work (15 min)

Identify one real workflow, communication, service, or decision involving AI. Map where people, AI, information, power, judgment, and accountability sit.

  • Part 3: Assess Belonging Impact (18 mins)

Mark where the practice strengthens, weakens, or leaves unclear each of the six conditions: voice, dignity, agency, access, connection, and trust. Name who benefits and who carries additional burden,

  • Part 4: Set the Authority Boundary (14 mins)

Decide, verb by verb, what AI may influence, what requires human review, and what must never be delegated. This is where Assist, Safeguard, and Human-Led become operational.

  • Part 5: Redesign One Real Practice (20 min)

Participants revise one AI-enabled practice by adding clearer human touchpoints, review steps, safeguards, and lines of responsibility.

  • Closing: Your Belonging by Design Action Plan (5 min)

Leave with one concrete change, one safeguard, and one next conversation to carry into your team or organization.
