The HRBP Competency Workbook is a six-page self-reflection tool for HR Business Partners who want to grow into real strategic business partners.
It’s a free download. There’s no email gate, no upsell inside the pages, and nothing to send back to me.
Why I built it
This is essentially the intake I run with HRBPs when I work with them one-on-one. It’s the first thing I use to understand where someone is in their career, what they’re confident in, where they’re stuck, and where I can actually be useful. It saves hours of guessing and gets THEM to see themselves clearly before I say a word.
After doing this with enough people privately, I decided to open it up to everyone.
What’s inside
The workbook walks you through five sections:
Your Business. Six questions on whether you can succinctly explain what your company sells, who buys from it, how it’s priced, how it collects revenue, and where it’s going.
Business Vocabulary. 25 common terms across Finance, Marketing, Sales, Technology, and Engineering. You rate your own confidence on each one.
People Strategy Integration. One question with four honest options. Can you connect your HR work to real business strategy, and if not, where exactly are you stuck?
Advanced HR Competencies. A 1-to-10 self-rating across Organizational Design, Performance Management, Employee Relations, Training and Development, and Compensation Modeling. Each scale has concrete anchors so you know what a 1 looks like and what a 10 looks like.
Reflection and Next Steps. A quiet moment at the end to decide what you want to grow next.
How to use it
Set aside 45 to 60 minutes of quiet. Grab coffee. Write your answers in a separate document (the workbook is designed to be filled in digitally, but a notebook works too). The point is not to rush. The point is to see yourself honestly.
This is homework that is just for you. Nothing in this workbook gets sent to me. Nothing goes on your LinkedIn. It’s a private tool.
Who it’s for
If you’re an HR Business Partner at any stage of your career, this workbook is for you. Whether you’re newly in the role or have been doing it for a decade, the questions apply. People at every level have discovered gaps they didn’t know they had and strengths they’d been underselling.
Download it. Fill it out. Keep it for yourself.
Whether or not you ever work with me after this, the single most valuable thing you can do for your HRBP career is learn how to self-reflect honestly. This workbook is one way to practice.
