I spent 25+ years as a software architect before going full-time on AI research and teaching. I found AI too exciting to keep as a side interest, so I made it the whole job.

AI tooling changes fast enough that keeping up takes real commitment. I co-founded Portland AI Engineers, publish the Altered Craft newsletter, and wrote a book on clean software architecture. All to help close the gap between what's possible and what people actually do.

I use AI development tools daily as my primary workflow, and I enjoy helping others put what I've learned into practice. I teach the systems I work in every day.
