Make Your Coding Agent Follow Your Design System

Luis Vieira

Staff Engineer

You have a design system. Does your coding agent know how to use it ?

Build the context, tools and evals that help coding agents create consistent interfaces with your design system.

Your team has invested in a design system. Yet coding agents often reinvent components, hardcode styles and ignore conventions.

Your design system now has a third consumer: the coding agent. In this two-hour, hands-on workshop, you’ll create machine-readable component documentation and canonical examples, make that context accessible to agents, and write evals to test how well they follow your system.

You’ll run representative UI tasks before and after these changes, combining deterministic checks with AI evaluation to measure improvements in adherence.

Leave with a working, agent-ready React design system example, an evaluation suite and a roadmap for adapting your own design system.

What you’ll learn

Build a React design system agents can discover, use and validate, then measure UI compliance with repeatable evals.

  • Standardize React component APIs, names and metadata so agents can choose and use the right components.

  • Write machine-readable docs and canonical examples that make intended usage explicit.

  • Expose structured docs and a searchable component catalog with a CLI and MCP

  • Ensure agent-accessible tools guide component selection and correct implementation.

  • Encode rules for design tokens, component usage and accessibility as automated constraints.

  • Give agents actionable feedback when generated interfaces violate your system's conventions.

  • Build a set of representative UI tasks that you can use to evaluate agents usage of the design system

  • Combine deterministic and AI driven checks to compare generated UIs and measure improvement.

Workshop agenda

  • Why design systems need to be agent-ready (15 min)

See where agents go wrong, then run a baseline UI task against the supplied React library to capture component, token and accessibility issues.

  • Build the agent interface (35 min)

Structure component docs, canonical examples and metadata.

  • Build tools for context management

Build a searchable catalog and expose tools agents can use to discover docs and components

  • Build design-system evals (30 min)

Create a set of representative UI tasks define your evaluation criteria and assess the agent performance

  • Apply the approach to your design system (10 min)

Identify your first components, constraints and eval tasks. Leave with a practical roadmap for bringing the workflow into your own design system.
