The What and Why of Capability Modeling

In the earliest days of enterprise engineering, a Business Analyst at Bose and I waited our turn to bowl discussing how we can bring all sponsoring, and impacted parties to shared perspective on the massive change that we were planning - John suggested that we experiment with discussing the current state of enterprise capabilities and how we intended to bring them to the required state to meet the challenge before those parties. Much to our surprise, it worked.
All parties wanted to talk and build capabilities.

Several iterations later, Process Management, Organization Design, Talen Management, Finance, Enterprise Architecture, Program Management, Investment Decisioning, and more functions preceded their work with update of The Capability Model.
