Course overview

Change Habits That Will Transform Your Career

Over the last three years, we've helped more than 1,000 women recognize and replace habits that were holding them back in their careers in our "Take Your Career to the Next Level" series.

One of the most frequent asks we've heard is that, while people are able to immediately take action based on our sessions, they wish there was a way to practice and drive more accountability around the new behaviors they are establishing to make them truly transformative. So we've taken what we've learned from running that series, and incorporated it into this course.

We've learned that tiny changes in habits can make all the difference in your career.

Our goals are to help you:

• Identify or name unhelpful habits you don't know you have

• Connect with others who are going through the same challenges

• Become more strategic about how you approach your career

• Set and maintain new boundaries

• Establish accountability as you practice and change your habits

WHAT TO EXPECT:

This course is about looking at habits you might not have intentionally chosen or even noticed that you’re doing. We'll provide actionable tips and ideas for how to change or replace the habits.

This is a highly-interactive course with in-depth discussion, Q&A, examples, exercises, and tactics you can apply immediately. There are 7+ hours of live instruction on Zoom. We will focus on both the "what" might be holding you back, and tactical pieces around the "how" to transform.

After the first 2 days, you will have a better sense of what might be holding you back and specific actions to take. For the 3 weeks that follow, you'll pick a habit or behavior to focus on, and, with the support of your cohort and online materials, you'll practice how to change the habit to make it work for you. Weekly, you'll get accountability exercises to put the concepts into practice, have the opportunity to ask questions in Maven as you go, and access to a live Q&A discussion with Jen and Naomi.

Course content

Focused on FOUR THEMES, if you answer "yes" to any of these questions, this course can help you.

#1. Strategic Career Thinking

Make sure your hard work is getting you to where you want to be.

Do you…

- Rely on hard work and being an expert to get you ahead, without strategizing career moves?

- Underestimate your abilities and not advocate for yourself?

- Avoid risks, staying in your comfort zone?

#2. Influence

Leverage relationships to reach your goals and get the recognition you deserve.

Are you…

- Unaware of how you're perceived in your organization?

- Hesitant to network?

- Reluctant to ask for help to expedite learning?

- Uncomfortable with self-promotion?

- Awkward when seeking feedback?

#3. Presence & Authenticity

Build your confidence and credibility by commanding your personal power.

Do you…

- Wait for direction or explicit approval before taking action?

- Bring problems without solutions?

- Use passive language that undermines your authority?

- Feel that you're either too much or not enough?

#4. Ruthless Priorities

You can achieve more without trying to do everything.

Do you…

- Perfect everything before sharing?

- Prioritize others' needs over your own?

- Struggle to say no, leading to overcommitted?

- Replay conversations, causing analysis paralysis?

The course includes:

• Review and reflection

• Real-life examples

• Hands-on exercises

• Frameworks to help you structure your written and verbal communication

• Bonus: 3 Q&A sessions

• Plus: Homework to put concepts into practice

• Live Zoom workshops

All the sessions will be recorded for reference.

This course is about sharing what we've learned and how it has helped us and many others. It's not about pointing out where you are insufficient and telling you to change. You decide how to use this information to create the career you want to have.

Not being in the right role was sapping my confidence but I was afraid to make a move… After attending one of your sessions I knew I had to take a chance… I was scared, especially as I liked my current manager (it was a risk) but I knew that I had to tend to my needs first and think of my career, not just my job. I did it and I love my new role!

I had a situation where I was trying to negotiate with another team and not getting anywhere. I took the advice to leverage my relationships and ask for help from someone in the group who could help bridge the gap between our points of view. They were able to help us make traction and get through the sticking point and move forward.

I have learned to say THANK YOU when I receive praise. I am often tempted to then share the Thank you with everyone else. Just taking a pause is a habit that I am continuing to develop and lean to take my share of credit for what has been achieved.

I have found it is important for me to focus on skills as a learning process rather than something I am good or bad at, so I rephrase my self-depreciating thoughts to focus on learning and development. I shifted from thinking 'I'm bad at ...' to 'I am learning ...' or 'I should have ...' to 'Next time I will..."

I reevaluated how I was spending my time to focus more on the top few things that were actually important for ME to do rather than just needing to be done by someone. In order to put this into practice, I had to admit to others how uncomfortable it was for me to say no to their request, but that I needed to focus on other priorities for my role.

Jen Weigel

Director of Program Management | Bringing order to chaos

I'm a people leader that brings organization to chaos. I've spent 15+ years gaining experience at companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Kaiser Permanente, and Thomson Reuters, as well as in government and academia. I know how to tackle tough problems and lead teams to success. I have a knack for strategic planning and have led the turnaround of a $XXM product line, scaled global programs, and implemented automated solutions to drive efficiency.

I spent 10 years working in restaurants and waiting tables through high school, college and law school. I started my corporate career as an accountant, became a lawyer and adjunct law professor, and later pivoted into technology. Previous roles and experience have spanned across customer experience, legal and risk, accounting and finance, program management, product management and operations, data analytics, process improvement, and digital marketing and content. I've learned a lot of lessons the hard way as I've pivoted roles and jumped companies.

As someone who loves to learn and try new things, I share my passion for building new skills and gaining knowledge with others through teaching and development. In my current role at Microsoft, I'm focused on helping my program management teams adopt and leverage AI as we transform the way our business handles strategy, planning, and delivery.

For me, this course is the best of all worlds - I get to combine my passion for ongoing learning with my expertise in business transformation and leadership to help you identify and reframe your habits for greater success!

Naomi Margolis

Naomi Margolis

Principal Engineering Manager | Energizing people and delivering results

After starting in tech at Amazon, I moved around jobs, and the country, as a SQL engineer, before settling into a longer work stint at Microsoft. Within Microsoft, I’ve tried out roles ranging from operations, project management, back to engineering, and most recently as an engineering manager. Over the last couple of years, I’ve been working on generative AI features, so I also have insight into succeeding in the incredibly fast-moving world of working on building AI features.

All of that to say: I’ve got experience across companies, teams, and roles, and have firsthand knowledge of what works (and doesn’t work!) when it comes to growing a career. I’ve also got lots of experience trying to fit in to the status quo vs confidently showing up as my authentic self, and the difference leaning into my strengths has made.
