Course overview

Thriving as a neurodivergent professional means reshaping the mold to fit you

This course explores neurodivergence in tech and design, unpacking stereotypes, role expectations, and barriers ND individuals face. Through personal stories and the actionable G.R.I.T framework, you'll learn to reframe ADHD as a strength, build self-awareness, and create a roadmap for growth. Walk away with tools to confidently advocate for your needs and support ND teammates.

We'll look at 3 layers of neurodivergent through a 10,000, 1,000, and 100 foot view.

10,000 foot view ✈️

Understanding ND in the broader tech industry. We’ll examine..

• The stereotypes that create unfair assumptions and perceptions

• Design role expectations and conflicting stereotypes that lead to perceived limitations

• How that limits opportunities and creates additional barriers for ND individuals

• How to manage imposter syndrome within a role that involves constant feedback

• How all of the combines creates a reinforcing cycle where individuals feel less capable, are less likely to advocate for themselves, further limiting their chances of success.

1,000 foot view 🚁

Narrowing the lens to design as told through my personal story. You’ll hear..

• How undiagnosed ADHD created impossible hurdles within my role and expected performance

• The story behind being fired before receiving my diagnosis

• How I overcame feeling stupid and rewrote my story to embrace my ADHD and re-learn myself

• The journey that gave me the strength and ability to understand, empathize, and accept myself.

100 foot view 🔎

Zooming all the way in to the individual level, exploring G.R.I.T step by step. You’ll learn and experience

• What G.R.I.T is and what it’s all about

• How to apply each part of GRIT to identify your needs, limitations, strengths, and superpowers.

• Live workshop time to perform each exercise within G.R.I.T so you leave with your own structured roadmap for growth and clarity in your role

You'll leave with:

• A "Manual of Me" template that can be shared broadly

• A self assessment with your ND traits as unique strengths

• An understanding and translation of your strengths as they apply to product and/or design

• Communication methods that enable you to safely and confidently advocate for your needs

• The tools to be seen at work and a few new friends

• If you’re a leader, you’ll leave with an understanding of how to recognize, empower, and advocate for ND teammates or direct reports.

I'm a Staff Product Designer passionate about neurodivergence in design, storytelling, and ensuring that design learning and growth are accessible to all communities.

With 14 years in the tech industry and ~10 years dedicated to design, I’ve built a deep understanding of the design process, leadership, and the role of communication in product success. Diagnosed with ADHD in 2021, I initially feared the diagnosis might hinder my career, but through focused bi-weekly therapy and self-reflection, I’ve reframed my neurodivergent traits as key strengths in my work.

In my professional roles, I’ve successfully implemented the G.R.I.T. framework I’ll be sharing in this talk. By gaining clarity on my needs and communicating them effectively with teams, I’ve consistently transformed my neurodivergent traits into superpowers that enhance my design thinking, problem-solving, and innovation. Over the past three years, I’ve used continuous feedback loops to refine my processes, making me not just a more effective designer but also a more collaborative team member.

As an active participant in design communities and a mentor in LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent-focused spaces, I bring real-world, practical experience to the table. I’ve successfully applied these principles to my work, empowering myself and others to harness neurodivergence as a tool for success, innovation, and equitable design processes.
