Course overview

Make your documentation efforts repeatable and sustainable for scale

Learn how to create a scalable system that can be standardized across the business, to keep it easily updated, relevant, and useful.

This 2.5-hour workshop will provide guidance and a template for thinking through how to set up this system first for yourself, then involving other people and roles into your documentation efforts for your company or team.

Note that specific tools are only briefly covered in this workshop, it is not a documentation tool comparison class.

The workshop includes pre-work, individual work time, small group breakout discussions about your systems-in-progress, and full group discussions.

It will be most useful for people who have already started creating the documentation itself.

This workshop is also offered as part of a larger 4-day course, this is day 3 of 4 in the larger course. If you're looking for help prioritizing where to start, writing or improving the documentation itself, and handling objections from other people, see the full course: https://maven.com/jen-bergren/documentation1

What you’ll get out of this course

Create a plan / system to continue creating, using, and updating/improving documentation

First we'll talk about setting a good example and testing the system yourself, for the time management, project management, and tools considerations.

Create a plan / system to expand the system to get others involved in documentation creation, use, and updating

Then we'll talk about how to expand your system across your team or company, assigning various roles in documentation efforts beyond just users.

What people are saying

I keep learning how to knock down knowledge silos! This workshop gave me a framework to take the documentation I created in her previous workshop from v1 to v2 & beyond. I am working on the mindset that "done" is better than "perfect" or even "good." Another great takeaway was learning how & when to include other people in my documentation system.

This course was fantastic -- really helped my team finally get moving with concrete action items and a plan instead of still debating how we could start. I think our overall team will see those dividends paid with an easier training process and more support along the way.

Documentation has helped me to learn how to do new things at my job more independently and be able to get back to that resource whenever I have a question. Jen’s teachings guided me to write clear documentation to be shared across the company and helped to build the habit of documenting which was essential to improve silos between departments.
