Course overview
Today’s world is filled with conflict: physical conflict that is playing out in wars across the globe; verbal conflict that is playing out on the political stage, the workplace, the home front, and social media; and emotional conflict that is playing out within each of us, whether we are conscious of it or not.
But have no fear! This course will explore why conflict happens, how it can be a useful (not hurtful) aspect of the human experience, and how skilled conflict engagement (not avoidance) is the key to strengthening relationships, achieving goals, and realizing positive results.
This course will also bust two popular myths about conflict: (1) that it undermines organizational culture and (2) that the other person is the problem.
We’re on the precipice of ‘conflict season’ here in the United States, with both a general election and the holidays occurring in the next few months. This two-day intensive will support you during this time (and beyond!) by preparing you with the skills and processes for engaging in a live conversation with a friend, family member, colleague, or collaborator - perhaps the conversation you've been avoiding, or the one you didn’t expect to have.
01
You work (or live) with others who have different points of view or leadership styles, and it exhausts you rather than energizes you.
02
Your differences cause you to get stuck in situations that prevent productive problem-solving and realizing results.
03
You feel a sense of loss because formerly strong relationships have accumulated "conflict debt".
Understand the surprising truth about where conflict comes from.
Distinguish between different levels of listening and why it matters when managing conflict.
Develop skills for asking questions in a way that deepens connection and mutual understanding.
Learn how to articulate and (re)frame the real issue(s) that need to be addressed.
Regulate thoughts and emotions when pushing the limits of your comfort zone.
Create a personal playbook to prepare for, initiate, and reflect on a conversation you've been wanting to have, or want to be ready to have.

With over 25 years as an innovation partner for global brands, Laura Weiss supports organizations and their leaders to successfully navigate change and get results.
Originally a licensed architect, Laura’s own change story began when she left architectural practice to focus on the broader world of innovation. She spent a decade as an Associate Partner at world-renowned design consultancy IDEO where she helped launch two practice areas and was responsible for the creation and delivery of highly collaborative, discovery-driven innovation programs for Fortune 500 businesses, and the design of original learning experiences and integrated coaching programs for high-potential leaders and teams in the private, social, and public sectors.
An insatiable curiosity about why and how innovation succeeds (or not) led to internal roles in organizations across a variety of industries, and the discovery that all change efforts are the result of relationship-driven leadership, not simply the application of a new technology or the introduction of a novel business model.
After serving as a Principal in Korn Ferry’s Leadership and Professional Development practice, Laura was inspired to re-launch her own practice, Design Diplomacy, LLC, to support organizations that are committed to delivering innovative outcomes for a better world. In addition to being an ICF-certified coach and leadership development consultant, she is a professional mediator and trainer with The Resolution Center in Beverly, MA.
