Microsoft Excel continues to be the gold standard for most financial modeling. While it's not always the perfect tool, learning how to perform in Excel will allow you to leverage your model for use in other platforms.

The goal of financial modeling isn't to build a financial model. The goal is to develop financial intelligence to support business decisions. The development of your financial models will allow you to better understand the drivers and nuances of the business and what can be done.

Certificate of completion

We start by understanding all of the data and information that's necessary to build an integrated financial model. This includes document requests, interviews, historical financials and more. We cover what needs to be done in the absence of information, which is so often the case with companies either just starting out or will poor quality of data.

Managing the data

We'll cover the foundations of what the financial statements do, how they're built, and the ways in which they connect to each other. We'll talk through the differences between small and midsized companies and large corporations and what you'll likely need to think about in your work with companies of all sizes.

Introduction to 3-Statement Modeling

The most well-understood financial statement is the income statement (P&amp;L). We'll walk through this vital part of the model step-by-step. First, we'll examine how sales can be forecast with a high degree of confidence. Second, we'll analyze cost profiles. Finally, we'll forecast overhead expenses and discuss the considerations that need to be made.

Building the Income Statement (P&L)

The balance sheet is perhaps the most misunderstood of the 3 statements. While many company owners feel it's merely a report to be maintained, CFOs and FP&amp;As know the balance sheet is the source of working capital management and optimization, capex planning, and more. We'll walk through every line and forecast it correctly while explaining nuance.

Building the Balance Sheet (B/S)

We won't be drumming "cash is king." No, we'll actually be building a set of indirect and direct cash flows and using them to highlight the financial well-being of the business. We'll highlight the similarities and differences between an indirect and direct cash flow and what advantages each may bring.

Building the Statement of Cash Flows

Once all 3 of the major statements are complete, we'll integrate the entire model together. We'll run tests to ensure all transactions are being tracked and incorporated correctly.

Completing the 3-Statement Financial Model

Remember, the model is just the tool, not the outcome. We'll sensitize the model and introduce various scenarios that the business might encounter. We'll develop schedules and reports for presentation to end users. We'll analyze what the financial model is showing us and use it to provide guidance to the company's leadership.
