Graduating with a degree in Computer Engineering, I went on to work for Microsoft, SpaceX, and a small AI startup called MindMeld. I left tech in 2016 with the goal of mastering the arts of improv and standup comedy. Having never written or performed before I knew I had to leverage the only skillset that made me unique in this space: engineering.
For the last 5 years I’ve reverse engineered comedy, performed thousands of times, and was ultimately able to make my living performing. In the last year I’ve leveraged these skills to garner millions of views and over 100,000 followers across social media. In this course I’ll convince you that being funny is the fastest way to stand out online and show you exactly how to do it.
When I wrote my first poem a decade ago, I assumed that a hobby so obscure would remain that: a hobby. That changed when I realized that in every audience I encountered, from Stanford to Google, it didn't matter who spoke the language of poetry - all of them understood it. And because they understood it, they were vulnerable to its impact.
Since then, poetic frameworks have propelled me through job interviews, promotions, and ultimately out of the corporate world and into a career as an international keynote speaker that lets me make my living with nothing but my story and my voice.
In this course, I'll help you discover the concepts that have helped me capture my audience's attention and imagination so that you and your ideas stand out at every performance you give.
01
Creativity is a skillset that can be honed. You'll learn reliable processes for generating original material. Then, just as importantly as your originality, you'll also learn how to steal like an artist. Lastly, you'll discover what it means to find your authentic voice - and you'll begin to find yours.
02
You'll explore how to tell stories without being beholden to the "once upon a time" framework. You'll discover how poets and comedians craft their stories around expectation and surprise, and how to integrate those concepts into the stories you tell.
03
You'll dig one layer deeper into the tools that make poems sing and stand-up sets pop. You'll take apart jokes piece by piece and learn how to write your own, and you'll apply the poetic concept of analogy to make a complex idea clear, simple, and sticky.
04
Here comes the fun part. You'll take what you've started to construct on the page and translate it to the stage. You'll learn how to apply the dynamics, timing, and stage choreography that turn a speech into a performance that will have your audience on the edge of their seats.
