Bowdoin College

Course overview

Get product innovation experience and coaching from an industry leader.

We will do lots of in-class examples and workshopping together as well as 2-3 hours of team/individual project work each day.

We will use approaches I've learned for the last 20 years as a product innovator at venture-backed startups, a small public tech company, and Microsoft and Google but adapted for students interested in product development careers.

Ideation and Reflection: Practice the art and science of finding founder-market fit.

Basic Market Research: How to size and assess a market opportunity.

User Research: Uncover user needs versus user wants, develop personas, and iterate.

Prototyping: No coding required. Build paper prototypes using pen and paper, Slides, or get fancier with Figma.

Pitching: Tell your story and field questions like a pro.

At the end of the course we will wrap up with a pitch competition and recognize the top teams overall, presentation, concept demo, strategic insights, and class contributions.

*Every class will end with a 20 minute AMA with Tom to dig into specific nuances you need more guidance on or to share specific challenges you're facing.

Who is this course for

Students interested in product development careers.

Students who are interested in a summer experience that is closer to a professional education than a camp.

Budding entrepreneurs who have an idea and want to refine and take it to the next level.

What you’ll get out of this course

Get first-hand experience with product discovery

Ideate, evaluate, iterate based on customer feedback, market analysis, and strategic planning.

Get experience working on a product development team

Product development is a team sport. Each cohort will be divided into teams of 3-4 students where you will divide and conquer, storm and norm, and compromise and synthesize.

Start to present like a champ

So much of the working world and education today is about communication and presenting to large groups. Everyone will be discussing, updating, sharing ideas, and engaging in the classes and expected to carry that over into their team projects.

Uncover your own interests

Are you more interested in being a PM, and engineer, a designer, a marketer, a founder, something else? You'll get a taste of all of these things and be able to reflect on which you liked the most and why.

With over 20 years of tech leadership experience, I'm not a typical high school instructor. I'm usually leading product teams, teaching at the college level, coaching senior PM's, or working on startup ventures.

You'll also find me hiking with my two sons (one at Paly and another at Greene middle school), my wife, and our yellow lab Daizy. I was also a decent Defensive Coordinator for my son's flag football team :-)
