Course syllabus

First Session: Introduction and Game Elements

  • You'll play an online escape game
  • You'll understand what is game-based learning and how you can use it to supercharge your learning experiences
  • You'll identify the elements of a game and will start brainstorming ideas for your own

Second Session: Game Mechanics


  • You'll learn how to craft your game's mechanics
  • You'll learn how to use AI as an assistant to brainstorm your game's learning objectives and elements

Third Session: Story and Aesthetics

  • You'll learn what makes a great story
  • You'll craft your game's story using ChatGPT
  • You'll design your game's world and assets using tools like Skybox Lab
  • You'll add interactivity to the gameplay

Fourth Session: Technology

  • You'll learn how to use Gaminar.net to add teams, leaderboards, and time constraints to your game
  • You'll put together all your game's assets and launch a first version of your game

OPTIONAL: Office Hours

You can optionally join Office Hours to ask questions, polish your game's elements, and receive feedback.

Fifth Session: Playtesting and Graduation

  • You'll do a soft launch of your game and will receive feedback from other players
  • You'll learn the 3 ways to facilitate an effective debrief to make learning long-lasting
  • We'll celebrate that you're now a game designer!
