What is Maven?

Summary
What do an education platform, a NASA mission, a women’s health clinic, and an open-source build automation tool have in common? They’re all called Maven.

What is Maven?

Maven is where top creators teach cohort-based courses.

What types of courses can you find on Maven.com?

Maven doesn’t accept every single instructor that applies. Creators must go through a vetting process and course development bootcamp to be featured on the maven site. So, while Maven has fewer courses than some other platforms, all are very high quality.
Here are some examples of popular courses on Maven:

Why are cohort-based courses better than other forms of online learning?

Have you ever purchased an online video course, only to not finish watching it? Or started a YouTube video series, but never finished? What about left an webinar early?
If so, you’re perfectly normal. Many types of online learning have very low completion rates, often in the single digits, because they’re not engaging, results-focused, or designed to hold both teachers and students accountable.
Cohort-based courses are the opposite. CBCs have much higher completion rates because they focus on active learning, not passive watching. Each course contains live workshops and hands-on projects designed to keep students engaged and interested.

How does Maven work?

Maven is an education platform that combines course marketing, community, syllabus, and video conferencing so that instructors and students can have a more cohesive experience.
Instructors use Maven to manage their cohort-based courses, including publishing a landing page, handling purchasing, sending out automated email sequences, publishing a syllabus publishing, and creating a community for students.
Students view this content through the student portal, which shows a calendar of all of the sessions, and provides and clear way to find content about each session and project, as well as access any other features or benefits of the course.

Why should I use Maven?

Other popular ways of teaching online include creating one-sided video content such as YouTube videos and massive open online courses (MOOCs). While one-sided instruction can be effective for some people, these types of courses have a 3.13% completion rate, suggesting that community and engagement are critical factors in engaging students.
Maven’s cohort-based approach to learning pairs students and instructors in an online experience that involves interaction, community, projects, and breakout sessions. This simulates many of the best aspects of in-person learning while still allowing students to attend courses taught by world-class instructors without spending time and money on travel and lodging.
