In fact, a 2016 study from Deloitte found that 63% of millennials reported being motivated by the desire to have “meaning and purpose in their work,” whereas a report by the IBM Institute for Business Value concludes that 66% of employees would consider leaving their current company for one that more strongly reflects their personal values and provides a better work-life integration.


Project success is not the same as team success.


I learned this the hard way when my credentials and title failed to motivate others and myself. I supported my teams to hit goals year after year, achieving important milestones and optimizing engineering costs constantly.


But something was missing. My teams seemed disconnected, and our impact beyond code was foggy. I was leading to make an impact in the team and company. I didn't feel fulfilled. I didn't know my purpose as a leader.


And I couldn't inspire, or build long-term trust. We were building solutions reactively. It was a zero-sum game!


Back in 2016, I had a revelation while introspecting about a professional setback: I was focusing too much on how to execute with excellence and too little to inspire people to become change agents.


But first, I had to inspire myself by discovering my inner WHY.


Discovering my purpose changed my entire career; the way I lead people, and how I impact my business partners. It allowed me to get promoted from Engineering Manager to a Director level role in two years. My inner circle was stronger than ever, and getting buy-in to drive innovation was not a pain anymore—even during challenging times.
