Cohort-based Course

Protect your personal data online. Learn privacy fundamentals, identify risks, choose secure tools, and safeguard all your digital devices.

Course overview

Develop a personal data privacy action plan in two weeks

Take control of your data privacy in just two weeks! This hands-on course combines two 90-minute live workshops (recorded for future reference) with practical assignments designed to help you implement privacy protection immediately.

With enrollment limited to just 15 students, you'll get personalized attention and can ask all your questions during our 30-minute Q&A sessions. Between workshops, you'll access curated readings, optional assignments, and an active course community to connect with fellow participants.

Just like in my Tableau and data analysis courses, I'll hold weekly two-hour Office Hours where you can drop in for additional support—or skip if you're all set. Plus, you'll get three extra weeks of office hours after the course ends to ensure you feel confident implementing your new privacy practices.

What you’ll get out of this course

Understand key concepts in data privacy that affect you as an everyday user of the Internet

Learn about personally identifiable information (PII), why it is important, and understand applicable laws. (This course will focus primarily on U.S. privacy laws like the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the California Consumer Privacy Act.)

Learn about common data privacy risks we all encounter as digital citizens

The "free" services we often use are not really free. We pay with our personal data. Understand how to read privacy policies and decide whether a "free" service is worth it to you.

Choose applications and tools that protect your personally identifiable information (PII) from theft and exploitation

Understand privacy laws and technology company tactics in order to decide where you need the most protection. We'll review our personal privacy stack together, including email, calendars, file and photo storage, messaging applications, and social media.

Apply best practices to managing devices like your smartphones, tablets, laptops, and wearable devices

Learn the most important actions you can take to make sure your personal devices are secure and as safe as possible from exploitation.
