As a professional story consultant I helped create the Disney animated series Tangled, and developed Canada's Oscar pick for Best International Film 2023, Eternal Spring. Students of mine have gone on to write and direct critically acclaimed films (The Mitchells vs. The Machines for Netflix), and I've worked with several other novelists and screenwriters on their individual projects (Avatar: The Last Airbender's Mike DiMartino, Sebastien de Castell's popular book series, and Dave Collard's Blacklist 2020 spec script (#3), Neither Confirm, Nor Deny).
I'll share with you what I've learned working with these professionals to save time getting your first draft right the first time.
With over 25 years of experience in the animation industry as an animator, storyboard artist, and director, I know how important it is to get the story working as soon as possible.
My credits include writing & storyboarding for the legendary Warner Bros. director Chuck Jones, animating on at least 15 films for Disney and Dreamworks (Tarzan and Enchanted, Shrek 2, and How to Train Your Dragon), and directing for Sony Pictures Television and Dreamworks TV.
01
Week 1: Getting to Know Your Story
First, you'll get to know your story by appreciating it as a unique and definitive personality--almost as if it is its own person (it is). By understanding the "Genre" of your work, you'll start to lay the foundation for a balanced and complete narrative structure.
02
Week 2: The Theme-Driven Story
Robert Towne, the screenwriter of Chinatown once said that "A movie is really only four or five moments between two people." In this next workshop, you'll learn how the greatest stories pit two points-of-view against one another to create lasting and meaningful conflict. Getting this right is the answer to your 2nd Act blues.
03
Week 3: Characters: Messengers of Meaning
Characters are not real people; they're vessels for carrying challenging points-of-view. Tying these perspectives to your artistic intention is KEY towards developing a strong foundation for your story. In this module, we'll start making choices that lead to shaping your story's unique narrative structure.
04
Week 4: Premise: The Intersection of Character and Plot
Some profess a difference between "character-driven" stories and "plot-driven" stories. The reality is that stories are a combination of both--you just need to know where to look. Choose the right inflection points to create a meaningful premise, and your story structure is ready to go.
05
Week 5: Outlining a Story with AI
Time to write. Want help outlining your story in a fun and meaningful way? There's an app for that. By combining GPT-3 artificial intelligence with a unique predictive narrative framework, we'll learn a quick, effortless, and fun way to plan out your entire story from beginning to end.
06
Week 6: Writing Meaningful Scenes with AI
With your meaningful outline in hand, writing your story scene-by-scene becomes just as much fun as playing your favorite game. That AI/narrative combo? Even more fun when you get into sequences and scenes.
Writing a meaningful story becomes a breeze once you integrate patterns & rhythms of narrative with the chaotic serendipity of an AI assistant
