Cohort-based Course

Deconstruct and unlearn outdated leadership 'norms' that are holding you back from leading effectively in today's workplace.

Course overview

To be a good leader today, we must unlearn the stories of yesterday.

We are at a crossroads right now. We can either stick with our old narratives about what a leader 'looks like' and keep trying to make people conform to them OR we can make space for the kind of leader we actually need to take us forward into a whole new era of work.

WHY DO WE NEED TO UNLEARN LEADERSHIP?

The workplace has changed. In fact, even the idea of a 'workplace' has shifted given the opportunities that remote and hybrid work have brought forward. However, leadership has not kept up with the changes.

Why? Because previous leadership 'norms' no longer apply but they have not been replaced with new ways of thinking about leadership on a deeper level. And the gap between leaders and their employees is widening.

The disconnects are very real and are causing a great deal of friction in the workplace. However, we cannot address these challenges just by focusing on developing leadership competencies.

Actual change will require us to unlearn what we think we 'know' about leadership before we can embrace new ways of leading for a new world.

Here's why: The journey of learning to be a leader is internal. We may receive information from these experiences but we often filter it through an already developed lens of what we consider to be a 'leader'. To integrate new ideas about leadership, we need to identify and understand what our preconceived ideas are and where they come from first.

This is why the Unlearning Leadership Lab exists. We identify and deconstruct old leadership stories to find what works for today's leaders, workplaces, and employees and what doesn't. We then co-create ways of thinking about leadership to increase your effectiveness as a leader in an ever changing world.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

During the Unlearning Leadership Lab, you will have opportunities to reflect on how your ideas of 'leader' were formed and how they inform your leadership today. We will reflect on why/how things have changed in the workplace and the world, enabling you to deeply consider which 'stories' are helping and which stories are hindering your leadership success.

And, as we know, it can be challenging to apply our learning when back in the workplace, so you will leave the experience equipped with concrete strategies, tools, and resources to put what you have unlearned/learned about leadership into practice right away.

CONTENT

๐Ÿ”น Unlearning: Leadership Stories - How did you learn to be a leader? Do you know? Many of us don't and may be carrying biases we don't know we even have. We will identify, explore and deconstruct historical, social and personal narratives about leadership that impact our lens of what a 'leader' looks like and why.

๐Ÿ”น Unlearning: Power - Some people are comfortable with the idea of power and others are not. However, power is a reality in leadership so it's important to understand what it actually means. We will examine concepts of power including 'power to', 'power with' and 'power over'.

๐Ÿ”น Unlearning: Competition - Given the historical structure of leadership, there is often an assumption that competition is an inherent part of it. We will identify the impact of competition in the workplace and explore how a more collaborative approach to leadership can improve culture and productivity.

๐Ÿ”น Unlearning: Conflict - Do you avoid having conversations with employees about poor performance or stay under the radar of senior leaders by not speaking up? If so, you are not alone. Many leaders today identify not 'liking conflict'. However, the stories we hold about it are often from our own personal experiences not the workplace. We will learn about healthy and unhealthy conflict, as well as the leader's role in navigating it.

๐Ÿ”น Unlearning: Leader-Employee Relationship - While many leaders have moved away from the 'command and control' approach to leadership, a more transactional style has arisen, creating emotional distance from those we lead and a focus on tasks. However, real leadership is relational, so employees are disengaging and feeling less connected to the organization. We will examine the 'why' of these shifts and the leader-employee relationship overall.

๐Ÿ”น Co-Creating: The 'New' Leader - No lab session would be complete without a gathering of the findings, an examination of the data, and the development of new insights, knowledge, and ideas for new ways of doing things better. This is what we will do in the last part of the session so that participants leave not only with what they have unlearned but new ways of thinking about leadership too.
