Course overview

What makes a great engineering manager?

People don't leave jobs, they leave bosses.

Most companies don't train you to become an effective engineering manager – you're thrown into the deep end and left to sink or swim, having a detrimental effect on both yourself and your team.

The fact that you're here viewing this page today means you're already one step ahead of the game.

The best engineering managers are on a perpetual trail of self-improvement. As you move from an individual contributor role to a people manager role, you're shifting your mindset from projects to people – from technical to interpersonal. This course guides you down the rest of your journey to arm you with the skills and tools to be the best engineering manager you can be.

Who is this course for

01

Aspiring engineering managers seeking to seamlessly transition from IC to EM

02

New engineering managers looking to navigate the challenges of their new role and succeed as a leader

03

Technical engineering managers who want to level up their people management skills

After taking this course, you'll be able to:

Build and scale a high performing engineering team

Your success as an EM is measured by your team's execution, and to have great execution, you need a great team. We'll talk through how to source, interview, and hire top engineers; identify and leverage strengths of your current team; and empower your team to grow as engineers.

Conduct impactful 1:1s and performance reviews

1:1s and performance reviews don't have to suck – my own team can back me up! I'll teach you how to keep the feedback loop active by applying my framework to conduct meaningful 1:1s and provide tactical, actionable feedback to your team.

Lead your team to ship projects on schedule without impacting quality

Your role as an EM is to empower your team to deliver projects on time and at top quality. I'll walk you through how to make Jira work for you, negotiate with your PM, and work through a reusable template to set realistic expectations and estimates with your team.

Navigate challenging conversations with peers and direct reports

Learn how to give constructive feedback from a trained therapist! I'll teach you effective communication strategies for conflict resolution, working through a PIP, and cross-functional differences in priority.
