Gary has over 25 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, most recently as the Executive Director of New York Cares, New York City’s largest organization devoted to driving community impact through volunteer-led programs. Gary has also taught nonprofit leadership, management, and strategy for over 10 years at Columbia University and Baruch College.


His previous experiences include positions at nonprofit organizations focused on arts education.


Gary's leadership has been recognized by The New York Times Company Nonprofit Excellence Award for Overall Management Excellence, and the Peter F. Drucker Award for Nonprofit Innovation. Gary was named a Notable in Nonprofits and Philanthropy by Crain’s New York and one of the CSR Responsible 100 by City & State.

Understand the many audiences you will need to juggle and how to prioritize the many demands and perspectives

Evaluate your assets and areas of development for the role of Executive Director

Create a personal development plan for building your skills and confidence
