Course overview

Learn how to deliver big tech projects and lead big cross-functional teams

COURSE CONTENT:

This course will teach you a combination of executive skills and large scale technology project / technology team leadership skills so that you can successfully deliver big tech projects.

We will show you how to translate your hands-on experience into executive decision-making, focusing on strategic planning, aligning technology with business goals, and scaling both teams and systems for long-term growth. You'll learn how to use your technical background to drive innovation, foster cross-functional collaboration, and influence stakeholders at all levels of the organization.

WHO IS IT FOR:

Engineering Managers, Product Managers, General Managers, Technical Program Managers, Senior Engineers—anyone wanting to be a great technology leader.

TECH LEADERSHIP BY DAVID MARKLEY (VP of Technology at Warner Bros, Discovery, Eurosport, Amazon; launched 100+ tech products; led tech teams of 300+):

- How do you build a successful tech team

- What is the role of tech in your business

- How is an idea brought into reality

- What can be done to make tech go faster

- What does it take to launch a tech product

- What does it take to operate a tech product

- How will AI impact tech

EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP BY ETHAN EVANS (Retired Amazon VP; 70+ patents; led global teams of 800+):

- The standards of great executive performance

- How do you become a scaled, deep leader

- Becoming a change agent who invents and solves

- Be known as a trusted decision maker

- Manage your team to execute with little oversight

- Lead your team to take calculated bold risks

- Inspire and drive your team to deliver executive-level results

Advice is based on Ethan & David's personal experience as VP executives and their diverse insights from his network of executives, coaches, venture capitalists, army officers, and startup founders. This is NOT theory.

Proven ROI for promotions and internal/external hires: Ethan promoted 8 reports from Senior Manager (Amazon L7) to Director (Amazon L8), contributed to 25+ Director promotions, hired 10+ Directors internally and externally, drove the promotion of 3 engineers to Principal, and of his former reports 2 are current Amazon VPs (L10) and 5 are C-Suite outside of Amazon.

How is this course different from Ethan's other Maven course titled "Stuck at Senior Manager - How to Break Through to Executive"? This course is about how to specifically lead big, cross functional technology and product teams to deliver new tech-based products and services. It includes the necessary executive leadership skills to do this, but less than what is needed to be a stand alone general manager or "pure play" executive. My other course—"Stuck at Senior Manager - How to Break Through to Executive"— is focused on general executive skills (nothing technology specific) and how to tactically achieve promotion quickly.

NOTE: Enrolling in both courses — If you want to enroll in both this course and Ethan's "Stuck at Senior Manager - How to Break Through to Executive" we will offer you a bundle package for $1795 (you save $395 if you were to buy each course separately). To claim, see instructions in the FAQs.

WHO THIS IS NOT FOR:

- This is not for you if you want 1:1 coaching from Ethan or David.

- This is not for you if you believe you already know what it takes to demonstrate tech executive performance.

- This is not for you if you want a slower-paced course over several weeks. This live course is 2-days of intense learning. It is designed for busy leaders who want to get the information and then quickly take action.

- This course is NOT technical training (architecture, coding, etc).

- This course is NOT promotion specific training. It is focused on successful high performance, which leads to promotion, but not on "how to get promoted."

What Ethan's former reports say

My ability to deal with different types of personalities, navigate EQ problems, and leadership situations is largely predicated on Ethan's coaching. Ethan is clearly a bar raiser on teaching people how to think about problems and how to communicate problem-solving.

I often refer to the lessons Ethan taught me (or that I learned through Ethan's example) while we worked together at Amazon. Seems like not a week goes by where I don't think about times where we were wrestling with launches, or where Ethan was wearing his barrister's wig in talent reviews. Thanks for investing in me.

Retired Amazon Vice President; 70+ patents; led global teams of 800+

In my 15+ years at Amazon, I led global teams of 800+ and invented well-known businesses and products such as Prime Video, Amazon Video, Amazon Appstore, Merch by Amazon, Prime Gaming (formerly Twitch Prime), and Twitch Commerce.

  • Hold 70+ patents.
  • Helped advocate for and draft the Amazon Leadership Principle (LP) “Ownership” — the words, “They never say ‘that’s not my job.’” are mine.
  • 10,000+ resume reviews.
  • 2,500+ live interviews.
  • 1,000+ hires.
  • Was an Amazon Bar Raiser and Bar Raiser Core Leader, responsible for training and maintaining Amazon's group of interview outcome facilitators.

I've promoted 8 reports from Senior Manager (Amazon L7) to Director (Amazon L8), contributed to 25+ Director promotions, hired 10+ Directors internally and externally, drove the promotion of 3 engineers to Principal, and of my former reports 2 are current Amazon VPs (L10) and 5 are C-Suite outside of Amazon.

I retired from Amazon as a Vice President in September 2020 to allow me to focus on paying forward my good fortune to others.

Prior to Amazon, I spent 12 years at 3 startups.

David Markley

VP of Technology (WB, Amazon); launched 100+ tech products; led 300+ tech teams

In my 20+ years as a technical executive (after 10+ years as an engineer), I led tech teams as the VP of Technology at Eurosport, Warner Bros, Discovery Inc, MotorTrend Group, Sweetgreen.

Prior, I served as Head of Global Developer Relations at Amazon for 7+ years, was the CTO of Outrigger Media, Chief Architect of AOL, and more.

  • 100+ tech products launched (20+ new products and 80+ significant product improvements or events)
  • Led 300+ tech teams.
  • Promoted 10+ reports to Director of Eng or VP of Technology and hired 20+ people into those roles.
  • Hold 12+ patents.
  • Have 1:1 coached 100+ tech leaders.
  • Was an Amazon Bar Raiser, reviewed 8,000+ resumes, conducted 2,000+ interviews, and have been part of hiring 1,000+ people across multiple job functions.
  • Helped create and launch the Hiring Champions program for Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) that greatly improved the quality of the people they hired.

I am a retired Major from the Army National Guard and led Engineer organizations (both combat and construction). I've commanded units during two natural disaster recovery operations and prepared logistics for a third: severe flooding in Ohio, hurricane relief in Virginia, and planned for post-Katrina. The military provided excellent training and real world experience in leadership, coaching, program management, and operating within a crisis. I carried that experience with me into my civilian career.

I have served six weeks abroad for the Army, but never in a combat zone. Both times it was for construction operations and "nation building," once in Germany and once in Jamaica (post-hurricane Gilbert recovery).

I am passionate about working with technically gifted people to create magical experiences that impact large communities.

Over the years, I have found that growing and developing people gives me a great deal of joy; especially when they go on to surpass my expectations. When they create technology that engages and delights others, I know that I have had a lasting impact.
