I remember sitting at home week after week writing out my spelling words 20 times each. That is what it took for me to learn the words. We had a spelling book with 20 new words each week. There was no creativity or flexibility, just practice followed by more practice.
Dyslexia is an everyday part of life for myself and my family. My mom struggled and so did one of my brothers and one of my sisters. I decided to learn how to help others who dealt with dyslexia.
My history of dyslexia allows me to share with parents a perspective that reflects the struggles of their own children.
It is my desire to help you. You know your child better than anyone else and you can help them achieve their best. I hope that you will allow me the honor of working with you.

Week One: Time to be a detective
You will learn specific skills to observe when your child is engaged in activities that require spelling. These observations will help you target areas of need. You will also learn how to make your first game.
By the end of the week, you will have collected an arsenal of observational skills, and implemented your first
02
Week Two: "When two vowels go walking - NOT"
Most of us learned a few rules that help us spell, and feel that it is all the "exceptions to the rules " that cause the spelling problems. Unfortunately, those tools were incomplete.
You will fill in the missing pieces of the spelling puzzle as we zoom in on specific phonics rules and create a game designed to target that specific skill.
03
Week Three: Continue our exploration of key phonetic skills.
We will wrap up our discussion on syllable types and other key phonetic skills. This provides the foundation for all other phonetic skills.
We will create card games to use in order to practice the skills you have learned this week.
04
Week Four: Learn to ask "why" when a word does not fit a rule you know.
Word study will completely change your view of spelling and equip you with tools to answer those "why" questions when a word seems to be an exception to a rule. This is a game-changer for older students!
This week you will use your new skills to create a blank board game that you can adjust to meet your child's specific needs.
05
Week Five: "Drop the <e> when adding <ing> and other suffixing rules.
Discover the rest of the story. Knowing the suffixing rules is key to spelling multi-syllable words correctly. The bonus here is that spelling multi-syllable words correctly leads to reading them correctly!
This week's game focuses on creating card games to practice those stubborn spelling issues. Practice can be fun!
06
Week Six: Filling your toolbox and Graduation!
Discover tools that your child can use in order to reduce the stress of spelling and focus on the content in writing. Technology has a lot to offer. Some tools even bypass the need to know how to spell a word.
This week you will try out a few of those tools with your child.
Enjoy a little graduation ceremony during our final session!
07
Bonus: Office Hours
Throughout the length of the course, I will hold regular Office Hours to answer your specific questions. In addition, you will have access to feedback from myself and other participants as we develop our own little community.
