Course overview
Help your teachers and students thrive in the classroom with the five key beliefs for student motivation, and learn the kind of strategic thinking and practical planning that will make passionate learning the bedrock of your school culture.
01
If you're in charge of PD next year and want to start planning now for something deeply good for all teachers & students, it's for you.
02
If collective teacher helplessness is spreading & you know the five key beliefs can help but you don't know what to do next, it's for you.
03
If you want PD to be something that you and your colleagues look forward to, something that builds up teachers of all levels, it's for you.
I want you to become deeply knowledgeable about the five key beliefs methodology -- so much so that you'll be an able thought partner to a diversity of colleagues, a perceptive leader of professional development, and an effective further learner.
When you start implementing the projects throughout the course, you'll start to see the change as more teachers and students come to school excited to learn.
I'm going to share case studies and examples from the PD work I've done with districts in almost every state in the USA and several countries besides so that you can plan from a strong, strategic standpoint for high-impact, low-stress PD.
To date, there's only been one person in the world who gets to explore the five key beliefs methodology with brilliant people far and wide -- me! This course will change that. Imagine a network of folks doing this same kind of work.

The difference between good and bad PD is a soul uplifted and of a soul crunched, a classroom enlivened and a classroom grayed, a career encouraged and a career questioned.
In the over 200 professional development sessions I've led during the past decade, I've tried thousands of tactics and learned from all kinds of failures. I've seen to build quick and lasting credibility as a PD provider; I've seen how ideas for professional learning can become an unintended burden instead of a much-needed boon.
The purpose of this course is to share what I've learned with you about leading professional development on the five key beliefs. I know of no topic more important for schools around the world than this one -- especially for this coming school year.
If you're responsible, in whole or in part, for professional development at your school next year, this course is for you.
01
The Content
Here we learn the five key beliefs methodology, straight from the guy who first developed it. I'll also share what I've found is a "minimum viable understanding" in a 1-3 hour opening PD session on this topic.
02
The Strategy
Here we set an Everest for a five key belief PD program, and then we look at the tools it takes to attempt the peak. We'll also examine the most common ways that PD presenters unintentionally harm their credibility and turn off the hearts and ears of folks they're trying to serve. I'll even pick apart the first hour of a PD session I led.
03
The Plan
This is where you start having fun -- envisioning a plan for 22-23 that works within your unique constraints and has the best odds of making a difference. You're gonna leave this course with a plan.
04
Refining
We'll spend our final two weeks of the course refining one anothers' plans and digging deeper into Content and Strategy. By the time we're done, our heads won't just be filled with ideas; our minds will be set on what it will practically look like to begin carrying this out.
05
The Pitch
PD isn't done from an island, so we'll end by practicing the communication it'll take to get more folks enlisted in this beautiful, good, and powerful work.
Active, not passive
This course focuses on live workshops and hands-on projects
Efficient, not exhaustive
I will give you every shortcut I know of for thinking as effectively as you can about the work you have ahead of you because every member of our cohort will be a time-constrained, in-demand professional
Learn with a cohort of peers
You’ll be learning in public through breakout rooms and an engaged asynchronous discussion community
